Grassroots America: We the People PAC

JoAnn Fleming and Grassroots America: We the People PAC (GAWTP) has a history of partnering with and endorsing people with highly questionable character, and poor conservative values, some of whom even have a known history of blatantly violating the United States and Texas Constitutions, as well as umpteen other state and federal laws.

KYLE CARRUTH

Apparently GAWTP wanted to double down against the Constitution, and in November, 2024, GAWTP had William Kyle Carruth as a speaker at an GATWP event. Kyle Carruth can be seen shooting his then-girlfriend’s ex-husband at this link. The ongoing wrongful death civil suit petition, filed by Tony Buzbee (one of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s lawyers during the Texas House Impeachment proceedings against AG Paxton) on behalf of Chad Read’s widow, Jennifer Read, can be read HERE.

Carruth is lobbying to have the Texas Civil Procedures changed by the Texas Legislature, specifically Chapter 83 by amending it to provide civil immunity (proposed changes filed by Representative Guillen HERE). This poses a Constitutional problem, as both the United States and Texas Constitutions provide for the unalienable private right to petition. Petition, by definition, is a legal action in a court of law. Civil liability is determined by a jury, unless that right is waived. Besides being a guaranteed private right, does anyone really think it’s wise to give power over OUR civil remedies to district attorneys? This is simply foolish, we know this is not wise, we have examples of liberal district attorneys choosing not to prosecute blatant crime, we have professed conservative attorneys picking and choosing winners. In NE Texas there is a report of a district attorney taking two stacks of files into the grand jury room and simply instructing the jury that this is the stack “we” want charged, and this is the stack “we” want dismissed, while presenting no other information to the jury. These are not the people we want to voluntarily surrender our right of civil relief to.

Giving a person who not only shot an unarmed man, but is lobbying for unconstitutional legislation, a platform, is egregious, especially when combined with the other judgement failures GAWTP has made in the past. It’s past time people informed themselves on the true nature of GAWTP, they are not the Christian conservatives they claim to be.

JEFF FLETCHER

In 2023, GATWP had a decision to make, endorse Hefner, Collier, or former Wood County District Judge Jeff Fletcher, for Texas House District 5. They decided they didn’t want to endorse without having had a candidate forum, so they arranged for a debate between the three candidates at Priefert’s Hangar in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Since the whole of the GAWTP Board was unable to attend, Sue Evenwel was in charge of recording the debate for GAWTP leadership to review at a later date. Representative Cole Hefner didn’t attend.

Following the debate I personally reached out to Mrs. Evenwel for a copy of the footage, and was informed that the cameras actually belonged to Brett Rogers, who had already been paid $4,000 by the Jeff Fletcher campaign. As a result of Brett Rogers also being employed by GAWTP, this was clearly a conflict of interest. JoAnne Fleming disagreed, and refused to provide the footage to both the Fletcher and Collier campaigns. Shortly after the refusal, the Collier campaign was informed that the footage on one of the candidates was compromised, “unusable,” and per an anonymous source, the footage that was unusable was of Jeff Fletcher’s performance.

The proposed solution was a private endorsement interview, with just Fletcher, Collier, and Fleming. In the meantime, opposition research revealed that Fletcher was a con-artist, had been publicly reprimanded by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct for due process violations, and the defendant in a civil suit for wrongful termination of a police officer, Terry Bevill, who was terminated for exercising his First Amendment right guaranteed by the United States and Texas Constitutions. Despite knowing all of this, GAWTP endorsed Jeff Fletcher.

COLE HEFNER

Hefner was first elected as a County Commissioner in Upshur County, but quickly lost the seat. Those in Upshur claim he lost the seat due to his lack of fidelity to conservative fiscal policy. After the loss, Hefner moved to Titus County and ran for State House District 5, and was endorsed by GAWTP. Following his election to the State House he had an extra-marital affair with Lacey Hull, then a candidate for State House herself. You can watch a video of Hefner at the RPT State Convention HERE.

Not limiting his illegal behavior to violating his marital contract, he has violated the Texas Constitution in a multitude of ways, the Texas Government Code, and had a hand in killing Republican Party of Texas priority legislation in his role on the House Calendar Committee. You can read our sworn complaint with just a short list of Hefner’s offenses, HERE.

BRYAN SLATON

Extra-marital affairs seem to plague GAWTP candidates, as another of their highly praised and endorsed representatives was former-Representative Bryan Slaton, who resigned his seat after being investigated by the House Investigating Committee.

SMITH COUNTY TYRANTS

Not limiting their endorsements of corrupt politicians to the State House, there is former Smith County Judge and Republican-In-Name-Only Congressman Nathaniel Moran. During the “crisis” of COVID-19 Judge Moran enforced a “stay in place” order, and “failure to comply will be considered an “imminent threat to public health,” the order said. The penalty is a fine of no more than $1,000, or up to 180 days in jail.” Despite his misdeeds in Smith County, GAWTP has endorsed and continues to support Moran.

Also during the 2023 Republican Primary, GAWTP had other choices to make, incumbent (corrupt and inept) Larry Smith for Sheriff or Chris Green, Pam Frederick vs. Christina Drewry for County Commissioner, and incumbent David Stein versus Kevin McCall for Smith County GOP Chair. Despite ample evidence to endorse against Smith and Stein, they endorsed Sheriff Smith; and didn’t endorse in the GOP race at all.

BRETT ROGERS

…Stay tuned for more on the mysterious non-history of Brett Rogers… Who is he? Where did he come from? What campaigns has he actually worked on? Can any of his representations be documented?
